Bridge
------
Time for my first submission for the new century, unless AF still have
some files lying around that I have forgotten about, that will be published
before this. Oh well.
Raytracing can be cool it you've got some nice objects to work with, and
if you can't or don't want to make your own it's easy to find someone who
distributes them. The trouble is that the selection is coloured by the
distributor's taste and technical preferences, and of late the objects
distributed by AF have been either
1) for some other tracer (not Imagine),
2) space ships, or
3) both of the above.
In an attempt to turn this strange trend I have decided to release an
object of my own creation that is both an Imagine object and not a space
ship. At least I would be very surprised to see a suspension bridge flying
around in outer space!
Why a suspension bridge? You know what it's like once you get into mode-
ling, you can't look at an object without starting to think about how you
can buld a copy of it in your favourite 3D program. And when I looked at a
suspension bridge I started thinking about how the cables could be done,
and started experimenting...
Like most my objects, this one was made entirely freehand without a real
model (what do you mean you can tell?), and it isn't entirely finished. For
one, it got rather boring after I finished the interesting part (the
cables). Besides, I started running out of memory and even though I can
still load the whole object I can't quickrender it. The unfinished parts
which I hereby leave to the reader are the vertical cables on the sides (If
you ask nicely I'll tell you how I did the ones in the middle), and of
course (?) colour and texture. And, of course, using the object in a scene.
Because this object was not originally meant for publication, both the
files and the objects they contain are named in Norwegian, but you should
be able to figure things out anyway. (Ask nicely if you want/need a trans-
lation.) And don't be confused by the number of files, you really only need
the newest one, Hengebro2.iob, which contains all the other objects grouped
nicely together.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
While I am writing something about ray tracing for AF anyway, it seems like
a good idea to plug a little project of mine. Last fall I aired some ideas
on the AFB list about several ray tracers collaborating on some big impres-
sive project (probably an animation) So far this has led to the formation
of an egroup called "reindeer", which has been joined by a handful of lur-
kers and discussed some plot ideas so far. If you are already on the AFB
list, joining another should be easy, and if you're not but you are on the
net, we would all like to know why... Oh, and you can join both lists and
several others at www.egroups.com
